Bayport History

🚆 First Train Station in Bayport

  • The first railroad service reached Bayport in 1868, when it appeared on the timetable of the South Side Railroad of Long Island.

  • The first depot (station building) was built by local residents in March 1869 with materials provided by the railroad.

  • A new station building replaced it in 1903, and the station ultimately closed in 1980.

📍 Location: Railroad Street between Oakwood and Snedecor Avenues on the Montauk Line.

📬 First Post Office in Bayport

  • A post office was established in 1858, and the town adopted the name “Bayport” at that time to avoid confusion with another town named Southport.

  • One early postmaster was William B. Arthur (1870–1885), whose building north of the train tracks served as the first post office site.

📍 The current Bayport post office building dates to 1956.
